Ether effects

Ether effects all the systems of the body. A brief account is given below.

Ether effects on Cardiovascular system:

It does not depress myocardium rather it stimulates sympathetic system causing tachycardia and hypertension.

Baroreceptor reflex is preserved with ether so ether can be used safely in patients with shock. Respiratory system: It does not depress respiration rather respiration is stimulated. Only at very high doses respiration is inhibited.

Ventilatory responses to hypoxia and hypercarbia are preserved.

  • Ether effects on Bronchial muscles:

It is potent bronchodilator. Ciliary activity: It is the only inhalational agent which preserves diary activity.

  • Ether effects on TracheobronchiaI secretions:

Secretions all over the respiratory lining are markedly increased, so premedication with atropine is necessary.

  • Ether effects on GIT:

Ether has the highest incidence of nausea and vomiting among all the inhalational agents.

  • Ether effects on Hepatic and renal functions:

Functions of the liver and the kidney are well preserved.

  • Ether effects on Cerebral:

Intracranial tension is increased with ether. Uterus: Uterine relaxation may be seen in deeper planes.

  • Ether effects on Uteroplacental barrier:

It readily crosses placenta and can cause respiratory depression in newborn.

  • Ether effects on Metabolic systems:

It releases catecholamines and can cause hyperglycemia. So should not be used in diabetics.

  • Metabolism of Ether:

Ether is metabolized to alcohol, acetaldehyde and acetic acid. These products are non toxic.
